This textile sample reads:

‘Convince the world that you are

Just and true in all you say

And all you do’

It was made in 1803 by a ten year old girl named Ann Mell.

Embroidery was a popular schoolroom exercise in nineteenth century England. The fabric would often be pulled taut over a wooden frame and the design stitched in from back to front. These samples could then be used either for decorative purposes or as a demonstration of the young girl’s skill when seeking employment in a house.
